Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC), a Finnish shipbuilding company, has received a contract to build two Arctic Security Cutters (ASC) for the US Coast Guard.

In a press release published by the website Naval News, the company explained that the contract is part of a historic agreement between the United States and Finland to accelerate the delivery of icebreakers to the US Coast Guard.

“The awarded contract marks a historic milestone. It is a significant vote of confidence in RMC and the Finnish maritime industry’s network,” said Mika Nieminen, CEO of Rauma Marine Constructions.

“We secured this significant agreement thanks to our experience and ability to build the ships within the necessary timeframe. Our fast delivery times make us the most affordable option on the market. Now, it’s time for us and our network to prove ourselves and show that we are trustworthy.”

Construction of the ships will begin immediately, with completion expected by 2028. The development will involve the participation of the US shipbuilder Bollinger Shipyards and the Satakunta University of Applied Sciences, which will act as a training partner.

The contract is a major achievement for the historic icebreaker cooperation between the US and Finland, announced in the fall of 2025 under the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE Pact).

Under the contract, RMC will build the first two Arctic Security Cutters based on the proven Multi-Purpose Icebreaker (MPI) design developed by Seaspan Shipyards in collaboration with Aker Arctic Technology.

“Our focus is clear: execute with discipline, manage risk rigorously, and deliver two cutters that are ready to operate in the world’s harshest maritime environment from day one,” added Nieminen.
